We hosted Süleyman Akbulut, President of the Social Rights and Research Association, on Tuesday, January 12, under the leadership of our Community Services Office. We would like to thank our guest for an enlightening conversation on the topic of “Perspective of disability in the axis of discrimination and inequality – criticism of robustism” online.

Who is Süleyman Akbulut?

Born in 1970, he studied econometrics and public administration. Between 2001-2008, he worked as a manager and consultant in various non-governmental organizations. In 2008, he took part in the establishment of the Social Rights and Research Association (TOHAD) and started to be the president of this association.

He opened many administrative lawsuits in order to gain disability rights and prevent discrimination and carried out advocacy-based studies. In 2010, he took part in the “Shadow Report” presentation on the disabled to the United Nations Economic, Social and Cultural Rights Committee, and in 2019, he took part in the Shadow Report presentations of TOHAD and the Disabled Child Rights Network to the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

He worked as a coordinator and research specialist in many projects. In this context, as a researcher and author in the publication of Disability Rights Monitoring Report 2013-2014. He was the aother for the “Accessibility, education, working life and health data-analyzes” and “Physical-Sexual Violence, Abuse and Maltreatment of Persons with Disabilities Research-2016” in the Disability Rights Monitoring Reports. He also took an active role in the presentation of the disability-EU progress report on Turkey, published in 2014-2015.

In addition to these studies, Akbulut was actively involved in writing activities. In 1998, he published his first book, “Confrontations of Stories”, consisting of poetic essays. In 2008, his memoirs named “Chair” by Doğan Egdmont Publishing House, and in 2012 his novel “Every War One God Kills” was published.

Süleyman Akbulut is still the President of the Social Rights and Research Association.
