The main features of a democratic education are; the children are participants, they freely express their opinions and these opinions are taken into account, and they are involved actively in the decision making process concerning issues that affect them.
At our school we give great importance to children’s active participation and involvement which is a fundamental right secured under the Convention on the Rights of the Child article 12.
The Student Council aims to develop and promote the understanding of democracy, and to have a say in the decision making process. In this regard every year our school council continues their accomplishments with new members. At Hisar, we hold elections every year to determine the Student Council and the Student Council President.
Our election process help the students to; understand the importance of the right to vote and stand for election, realize that the council system work is to represent all opinions and views, and apprehend that freedom of thought, which is necessary for people of different ideas to live together in a peaceful and democratic environment, is a very important and precious asset.
We started our process to establish the primary school student council, which is based on the above principles, by electing class representatives from September 26 to 30. Then from October 3rd to 6th, the elected class representatives got together and formed groups. The three groups; Democratic Hisar, Environmentalist Hisar and Super Hisar, formed by the class representatives carried out their propaganda campaign according to the by-laws from October 10 to October 17. Each group completed their campaigning period with visits to classrooms. On Wednesday, October 19, all primary school students voted for student council president. All student groups took responsibility in the process to make sure that the election was executed systematically and smoothly. Counting of the votes was done under the supervision of our advisory teachers Ömer Babacan and Hatice Özbek.
Finally Democratic Hisar, receiving the most votes was chosen for school council duty.
On November 1st, all class representatives came together and assessed the election. They shared their observations regarding the election and its process and made suggestions. Our class representatives then started to gather ideas, suggestions from all classes to determine the duties and work the student council will execute this year.
Our student council; we believe your work will be based on democratic principles as you will protect and defend every student’s right.
